BIG, HUGE, GIGANTIC NEWS!
WE WON A PRETTY AWESOME CONTEST!
Cake and Loaf competed against 3400 other small businesses across Canada and we won $100,000 in the Telus/Globe and Mail small business challenge!!
We are so proud of our amazing staff who make it all possible. We are also incredibly thankful to Hamilton and all Hamiltonians who have been so incredible supportive – voting online, giving us words of encouragement and supporting us by shopping at Cake and Loaf.
What are we going to do with the money?
We will continue to create the best work environment we can – We’ve worked hard to get everyone up to Living Wage and a lot of sacrifices have been made to get there. We will continue to act as a non-profit, funnelling any profits back into wages.
We are giving back to the city we live in – The grand prize includes $10,000 to donate to a charity of our choice. We’ve chosen Food4Kids, an amazing local charity that supports access to breakfast programs in Hamilton/Halton schools as well as provides take-home backpacks of healthy, nutritious food for the weekends.
We are going to throw our staff an amazing Christmas party – In the past we’ve had a pretty small budget for internal events but are planning a fantastic party. We want to treat our staff to the party they deserve!
We are celebrating with the community – We will be hosting the second annual “Lights of Durndurn” festival – a celebration of winter – for the neighbourhood. This is a free event with carollers, crafts for kids, face painting, freshly candied nuts, giant gingerbread necklaces, storytelling, live music, hot apple cider, and more – all free for the community. We will also be collecting donations for a community partner TBD.
“That’s a lot of money- you guys must be rolling in it!” – Although we are super grateful for the big win and all the opportunities it opens up to us, in terms of the projects we’d like to undertake this money is a small piece of the bigger puzzle. Opening a third location or adding an addition to our existing bakery would both cost more than $200,000 and we are currently exploring ways to leverage our winnings and make the biggest impact. Don’t worry, we’re resourceful peeps and we will find a way to make it work!
“Are you moving locations?
Will you close the Dundurn location?” -We put a lot of time and effort into our current location and it will remain Cake & Loaf HQ for years to come! From barbershop to bakery, our baby will remain your neighbourhood beacon.
