Cake+Loaf strives to use 100% local ingredients where ever possible in their products. Where using a local ingredient is impossible (like chocolate or coffee) our first priority would be that it's responsibly grown, harvested or produced. The second priority would be that it's supplied by a local company- perferably one that has a hand in the final product- like our locally roasted coffees. We do this for two main reasons, because of the short shipping distance local products are usually more fresh than their counterparts and therefore retain more of their nutritional value. They are usually less processed and it is easier to confirm the growing and harvesting practices involved. This all creates a higher quality product. Secondly, the entire community benefits from local products. The money spent on materials stays in the community and helps Hamilton sustain healthy farmland and quality living conditions for farmers and small suppliers. The environmental benefit of the decrease in shipping distances, decreased need for packaging and increased farmland is obvious. Supporting local farmers and suppliers also helps build vibrant communities where children grow up understanding where their food comes from and the importance of their food choices.

All of the baked goods at Cake+Loaf contain whole grains, organic flours, real butter, organic free range eggs or fresh fruits and vegetables. In short, real food. As Micheal Pollan wrote, “don’t eat anything your great-great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food”.
