We've really been enjoying Scott Orr and The Good Hunters (both compliments of Other Songs Music) at the bakery and would love to support some more local bands. If you think your music is "bakery appropriate" and at least one of the members of your band lives in Hamilton or is from Hamilton we'd love to hear your music. The staff of Cake+Loaf will pick our top 5 favourites and play exclusively those albums for the whole month of March. If your album is selected we'll reward you with cookies, feature your band on our chalkboard, offer your CDs for sale and our favourite band will receive a $50 Cake+Loaf gift card.
Please drop off CDs at the bakery or email us a link to download your music by February 25th to be included.

As Cake + Loaf prepared for the bakery to open, we were lucky enough to have Geoff, from Detour Coffee, visit and teach us some espresso basics. We were excited to learn how to pour a shot, steam milk, and drink like an expert (and expert he is, Geoff recently won first place in the Central Canadian Barista Competition!).

One of our taste-tests involved four different espresso shots, each poured longer than the last. Geoff did this to illustrate the importance of testing and trying different times, to get the shot that delivers the best overall taste. While some people prefer more bitter or syrupy, we were to find the middle ground - something that masses could enjoy.

After some demonstrations from Geoff, it was our turn to try. Amanda stepped up and after a few tries, made us all some yummy lattes!

Nickey was next to try, and another (successful) barista was born!

Before the bakery officially opened, Cake & Loaf beganselling its baked ambrosia at various farmers' markets in Hamilton.
At both markets, Cake & Loaf shares a stall with Hero Mobile Cafe, selling coffee (hot and cold) as well as refreshing iced teas.
Every Wednesday from 3-7pm just behind St. John's Anglican Church in Ancaster, Cake & Loaf joins over twenty other vendors for an outdoor market in a beautiful setting. This particular market was established in 2009, but grew quickly, seeing numbers of patrons in the several hundreds.
You'll be able to stop by the Cake & Loaf stall until October 5, 2011.

In case you haven't yet, visit one (or all) of Hamilton's farmers' markets. They're full of fresh, local produce, baked goods, flowers, and more. Support
A few weeks ago at Cake & Loaf we decided to use some of Ontario's amazing strawberries to kick off preserving season! We have big plans for all sorts of sweet and savory jams and sauces. They will be available throughout the summer in the bakery, and we will be keeping some in our kitchen for Josie, Nicky, Julia and Maria to incorporate into their recipes. (Jam tarts! Strawberry danishs! Anything you can think of you'd love to see/eat?)
I've never made jam before, but it was actually much easier then I thought. It's definitely inspired me to use some of my own fruit from my backyard and make my own jam. The possibilities are endless. And the great thing about making your own preserves is that you know everything that went into them.
We took 11 pints of strawberries, washed and hulled them. They just look so gorgeous and fresh.
We made jam using pectin, a less time consuming method then without petin, and Josie told me it keeps that summer fresh berry taste! We squished up the berries (no picture of that, the hands were too messy!), mixed them in a giant pot with the pectin and lemon juice and brought it to a boil. Then add your sugar! We substitue half the sugar for honey, to add a little more flavour. We tossed a bunch of vanilla beans in there as well to up the flavor ante even more.
Once the sugar is all melted, you pour the jam into sanitized jars with this fancy jam-jarring tool then boil them to create a perfect seal and keep the jam fresh.
They just have to sit for a while to set and voila! Cake & Loaf's first batch of jam this summer! Strawberry Vanilla Honey. I can't wait to mix mine with yogurt and granola, or peanut butter and jam sandwich on Super Seed loaf (my favorite Cake & Loaf bread...so far!)
If you see a jar at the market stalls in the next few weeks, scoop it up and let us know how you liked it!
